The WNBA draft is happening tonight and there is a big buzz surrounding it unlike we’ve seen before. There are a lot more eyes on this year’s class and we he excitement is at a level women’s sports deserve.
The biggest reason? Caitlin Clark.
The former Iowa guard is a complete star. On and off of the floor. She brings eyes and excitement to the game that has been needed and once they’re watching they see the other stars and other great basketball.
We already know who will go first. It’s Caitlin. When the draft starts, it’s only going to be a formality that we hear Caitlin’s name first going to the Indiana Fever. There have already been tickets sold in Indiana to see her play. A lot of tickets. The Fever have already sold 93% more home tickets in anticipation of Clark’s arrival.
She isn’t the only player getting drafted though.
Clark deserves all of the praise and all of the love she’s getting. However, there are other stars in this draft that deserve some love.
Here are the biggest non Caitlin Clark storylines heading into the 2024 Draft:
Who will go 2nd?
As stated, it’s basically a formality that Caitlin Clark’s name will be called first but no one knows who will be the second young lady called.
The pick belongs to the LA Sparks who seem to be starting their rebuild. They kind of need to hit on this pick because whoever they pick at two and four could be the cornerstone pieces to get them back on a championship level.
The two names that seem to be the consensus are Stanford’s Cameron Brink and South Carolina’s Kamilla Cardoso. Either young lady would be a great pick to start the rebuild. Both have the size to compete in WNBA front courts and skill to compete on both ends of the floor.
Other names that could possibly hear their name called are Tennessee’s Rickea Jackson, LSU’s Angel Reese, UConn’s Aaliyah Edwards, and Ohio State’s Jacy Sheldon.
Where will Angel Reese land?
Caitlin Clark was undoubtedly the biggest star in college basketball but Angel Reese was right behind her.
She was a little more polarizing and a lot of people thought she took a step back for some reason but she’s still a star and she will have a lot of eyes on her. Where will Reese land?
Right now, she’s mocked anywhere from four to eight. That means she could land with the Sparks, Sky, Wings, Lynx, or Mystics. Personally, I like her fit with the Sparks the most but with them likely drafting Cardoso or Brink it wouldn’t be wise for I draft Reese also.
Either way, it’s going to be very interesting to see where she lands.
How do the Sparks and Sky rebuild look after the night?
Both the Sky and Sparks are in a rebuild right now and have the potential to clean up after tonight. Both squads have two picks in the top eight and could end the night with the pieces that will help turn them into contenders in the near future.
Both are likely to end the o with a front court star but what do they do after that? Do they stack the front court and go after someone with size but will balance out whoever they draft first? Do they get guard play time balance out their team that way?
The good thing is they have options.
Who will be the night’s fashion queen?
This might be the biggest question of the night.
This year’s class is filled with a lot of very stylish ladies so whoever reigns supreme will have to come with an exceptional outfit.
Angel Reese is probably the favorite because she showed a lot of style throughout the season but don’t sleep on the likes of Cameron Brink or Kamilla Cardoso.
The WNBA draft will be aired on ESPN at 7:30 PM ET.
