Over the past several seasons, you may have heard this one or a thousand times: Brock Purdy, the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, was Mr. Irrelevant in the NFL Draft.
Being the final selection in the draft, Purdy’s compensation in the NFL isn’t particularly high. His four-year contract is for $3.737 million. The previous season, he made $870,000 in base pay. Perhaps you’ve also heard that Purdy drives a Toyota and rents a room from a roommate.
Purdy and a few other players at the lower end of the NFL’s salary scale were quite excited when the league revealed its performance-based bonuses on Monday. Purdy’s incentive payments were over $739,000. This represents an increase of around 85% over his base pay from the previous season.
Perhaps Purdy might lend a bit more assistance this month with the rent.
A large bonus goes to Brock Purdy
Players that receive a lot of playing time are rewarded with lesser earnings under the NFL’s performance-based pay scheme. Purdy played well enough to help lead the 49ers to an NFC championship in 16 games that he started for the team. Purdy received a precise amount of $739,795.
John Simpson, a guard with the Baltimore Ravens and a 2020 fourth-round pick, led the bonus program with $974,613. Simpson played in 99 percent of the offensive snaps and started all 17 games for the Ravens.
Purdy and other players in that top 25, such as 2023 All-Pro DaRon Bland and cornerback for the Dallas Cowboys, Purdy, are expected to sign large new contracts shortly. They are rewarded with some additional cash now while they wait for their second contracts because they have outperformed their draft position. That’s what the NFL’s program is all about.
He is surely making a fortune shortly. After his third season in the NFL, Purdy will be eligible to sign an extension. He is currently through his second season. Being a productive quarterback for a winning club will land him a contract that dwarfs his present six-figure income.
Purdy’s bonus puts a lot more spending money in his pocket until that contract is signed.
