Gilbert Arenas Makes Audacious Celtics Prediction : “Can’t See Them Going Back-to-Back”

The Boston Celtics ended a 16-year drought and won their 18th championship in their history during the 2024 Finals against the Dallas Mavericks. Unlike the Denver Nuggets, they will fancy their chances of adding another title in the 2024–25 season, given their well-oiled core. Gilbert Arenas, nevertheless, rejects the idea that such a thing is possible. He thinks the Celtics’ style of play isn’t ideal for winning two championships in a row.

The three-time All-Star asserted on Gil’s Arena that the Celtics would eventually tire out because they try so many three-pointers. This would allow their rivals to gain the upper hand. After telling his other hosts,

From the style they play, I personally can’t see them going back-to-back. They play Five Out and whoever gets it, just chuck a three.

Nick Young, on the other hand, disagreed, saying that he doesn’t see a path to unseat the Celtics unless a top team makes a major move similar to the Golden State Warriors in 2016 (bringing in Kevin Durant). Arenas, though, remained unimpressed.

Later, he acknowledged that no NBA team has as much depth as they have, but he didn’t waver in his prediction that they won’t be able to win in back-to-back seasons. It’s interesting to note that Rashad McCants agreed with Arenas’ assessment and thought the Celtics’ chance to win a championship had passed. But has it not?
