NFL Insider Explains That the New Baseline for Quarterback Contracts Is $55 Million After Trevor Lawrence deal

Every year, the market for quarterbacks gets more and more competitive. Given that Trevor Lawrence now has a $55 million contract, Tua Tagovailoa’s next contract is anticipated to be even more lucrative. According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, this deal at over $50 million is now the most basic.

Lawrence inked a $275 million five-year contract extension with the Jaguars after landing a blockbuster deal. For a quarterback who didn’t do much the previous season, that is a significant salary. Conversely, players like Dak and Tua had one of their greatest seasons. Pelissero believes that this will make things more difficult. In his opinion,

“Now if you have a debate whether Tua’s contract should be closer to a $50 million or $60 million, his agent is probably going to say, ’55 is the floor, and we wanna beat that.’ Because Trevor Lawrence statistically has not done what Tua has done… We went from 40 to 45 to 50 to now 55 is really going to be the baseline for all these deals to get done.”

Trevor Lawrence and Joe Burrow’s exorbitant contract

Lawrence and Joe Burrow, the quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals, are now tied for the NFL’s highest yearly average compensation. The Dolphins and Cowboys will probably come to regret not extending contracts to Tua and Dak before to Lawrence’s deal, which completely changed the expectations of the market.

Lawrence’s contract also includes robust assurances. It may get much harder for the team if Tua’s agent tries to support his client with those assurances. Unless a group chooses to adjust the market. But would a team be ready to jeopardize their relationship with its quarterback in order to do that?
