Paris Olympics 2024 Draws 28.6M Viewers; Most-Watched Opening Ceremony Since 2012

NBC Sports revealed on Saturday that 28.6 million people watched the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris on both NBC and Peacock. Because of this, it was the most watched Opening Ceremony since the London 2012 Games. Rick Cordella, president of NBC Sports, stated in a statement:

“Last night’s Opening Ceremony, one of the most ambitious and complex in Olympic history, was a spectacle for those in attendance in Paris, delivered a huge audience across our NBCU platforms, and set records for Peacock,”

The Rio Opening Ceremony drew 26.5 million views, while Tokyo’s 2021 Opening Ceremony drew 17.9 million viewers overall.

About 2.5 million people watched the Opening Ceremony on Peacock, according to NBC, making it the most streamed event ever and the “No. 1 entertainment event in Peacock history.”

How good was the opening ceremony for Paris 2024 olympics ?

There’s no denying that the Opening Ceremony produced spectacle, even though opinions were divided—because what isn’t these days?

Every participating nation’s athletes paraded to the Trocadéro on boats. Lady Gaga gave a French-language performance near the Seine. The bells at Notre Dame were rung, Marie Antoinette appeared headless, a drag and dancer depicted the Greek god Dionysus, the cauldron was traditionally lit, and Celine Dion performed.

Thomas Jolly, artistic director of Opening Ceremony, responded to criticism directed at some aspects of the show by saying:

“We wanted to include everyone, as simple as that,”  “In France, we have freedom of creation, artistic freedom. We are lucky in France to live in a free country. I didn’t have any specific messages that I wanted to deliver. In France, we are republic, we have the right to love whom we want, we have the right not to be worshippers, we have a lot of rights in France, and this is what I wanted to convey.”
