“Mid-Form” Patrick Mahomes is Compared to a Sports Card Photo by Travis Kelce

Although there have been many highlight-reel plays in Patrick Mahomes‘ career, his behind-the-back pass to Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was extremely impressive. The fact that Mahomes executed this trick play so deftly after Kelce misheard the original play call elevated it to much more significance.

After the Lions game, Travis pretended to speak in his friend Patrick’s distinctive voice on the sidelines. He then swiftly acknowledged that the quarterback had “kind of mumbled out the play.”

Travis gave a surprising explanation of how rapidly Mahomes healed, even drawing a comparison between his star quarterback and a picture on a sports card:

“Before I knew it, he snapped the ball and then I kind of saw him out of my peripheral run to the sideline. So I was trying to go and help my guy out, by the time I looked over there, he was already in mid form, like a photo on a sports card, throwing the ball to me.”

Everything happened so quickly, as Travis remembered. The drive ultimately resulted in a field goal, and Mahomes only appeared in two series as the Chiefs lost 24-23. But his pass to Travis was a magical moment that sprang from a misunderstanding.

Mahomes had earlier acknowledged in the post-game interview that he had been initially dissatisfied with the play’s development. The three-time Super Bowl winner said that Travis Kelce was running the incorrect route, and he was “yelling” at him for it.
