In the forthcoming season, LeBron James‘ long-held desire to play alongside his son Bronny is expected to come true. His next major objective is to become the second NBA player to buy a team, after Michael Jordan. Though Mark Cuban has cautioned him that experiencing success as an owner is far more challenging than as a player, he still has his sights set on acquiring the Las Vegas franchise.
When the former majority owner of the Mavericks made an appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast, the host inquired about the kind of owner James would be.
Mark Cuban gives LeBron James a Michael Jordan warning
Making reference to Jordan’s time as the Hornets’ owner, he asserted that the four-time MVP would need to drastically change his perspective if he were to acquire the Las Vegas team. Cuban stated: “It’s going to be a lot harder for a player. We saw Michael Jordan. Great guy, had some success, but not as much as he would’ve wanted. It’s hard because players have one mindset and then look at other players in a certain way…It’s just completely different perspective that’s hard to disconnect yourself from. It’s hard to be objective and not have your player mindset.”
According to Cuban, role players are better general managers than superstars like James or Jordan because they have a deeper understanding of team dynamics. His assessment is supported by the Bulls legend’s terrible stint with the Hornets.
Over his 13-year ownership tenure, the team had more lottery selections than postseason trips. They had the fourth-worst record in the league during that time and had not won a single postseason series. He received a huge return on his $275 million investment when he sold his franchise part for $3 billion. Jordan, though, will go down as one of the worst league owners ever. James remains unwavering in his quest to be the owner of a franchise even after the Bulls legend’s failure.
