An Analyst Describes Cleveland’s “Only Escape Hatch” Amid Deshaun Watson’s Poor Run

The Browns‘ $246 million guaranteed investment in Deshaun Watson seems concerning as they have a 1-4 start to the season. Because of the significant dead cap impact they would suffer, dismissal is not an option. As a result, Nick Wright has proposed what he considers to be the team’s sole choice.

The analyst created a hypothetical trade scenario for the Browns to think about during the most recent episode of What’s Wright with Nick Wright. He made the point that they ought to move him to a team with plenty of salary space the next season rather than taking a devastating $172 million dead money hit.

Deshaun Watson’s poor form

He said that Watson and their first-round choice may be offered. The dead ceiling will be reduced from 172 million dollars to about 80 million dollars. Wright said :

“It is onboard that after this year Cleveland their escape hatch is finding a team with a lot of cap space and trading DeShaun along with their own first-round pick to a team just so that team can cut him. You get DeShaun, and the 4th pick of the draft, for a conditional 7th-rounder. That would be unprecedented but that’s the only escape hatch,”

Watson has only passed for 852 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions in five games, averaging only 4.8 yards per pass. He hasn’t even thrown 200 yards yet. There are more stories supporting the quarterback than yardage. With the longest play pass being a 30-yarder, the passing game has also been lacking. Although he cannot be held solely responsible, Watson is in a difficult situation as a result of his more than 20 sacks and the Browns’ numerous injuries.

Not even his 2023 season was particularly noteworthy. Even though the club finished 11-6, Watson only managed 7 touchdowns for 1,115 yards at a 61.4 completion rate. Many have questioned his contract with the Browns in light of these figures.
