Shams Charania is a prominent NBA insider and sports journalist known for breaking major news in basketball. He currently works as a senior lead NBA reporter for The Athletic and Stadium, where he provides real-time updates on player trades, signings, injuries, and other breaking NBA news.
Charania first gained recognition in 2015, when he began breaking stories while working for RealGM and later Yahoo Sports. His reporting has put him on the same level as other high-profile insiders like ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Charania is known for his speed in delivering breaking news, often scooping stories before major outlets.
Born in 1994, Charania developed a passion for sports journalism in high school, and by the time he was in college, he had already started making waves in the industry. His career took off after he interned at RealGM, a sports website, while still in college at Loyola University Chicago.
Charania’s coverage has expanded beyond just NBA updates, as he also reports on the G League and international basketball. His reputation for accuracy and timeliness has earned him a large following in the sports media world.
Adrian Wojnarowski, ESPN’s top NBA insider, stunned the sports world by announcing his retirement in September 2024. After a distinguished 37-year career in journalism, including seven years at ESPN, Wojnarowski is stepping away from breaking NBA news. He explained that the commitment required for his role is no longer something he’s driven to maintain, and he wants to spend his time in more meaningful ways.
Wojnarowski will now take on a new role as the general manager of the men’s basketball team at his alma mater, St. Bonaventure University. This decision, described as his “final Woj bomb,” was unexpected, especially given his legendary status in the industry. Despite leaving an estimated $20 million in potential earnings on the table by leaving ESPN, he said he’s ready for this new chapter in his life(
Awful Announcing.
His departure leaves a significant gap in NBA coverage at ESPN, and there’s already speculation about who might fill his shoes. Some have pointed to Shams Charania as a possible successor, though nothing is confirmed yet.
According to Front Office Sports, Charania is real close to a signing a deal with ESPN.
The Charania-ESPN talks are at the “5-yard line,” says one source. Charania’s prospects have been elevated by the ringing endorsement of ESPN star Pat McAfee, said another source.
McAfee has publicly stumped for ESPN to hire his frequent guest star as the natural successor to Wojnarowski. Said McAfee on his show: “Shams Charania’s the answer. I know there’s conversations happening. … But if you take our bias out of this conversation, there’s only one answer. It’s Shams Charania.”
Shams also has interest from Prime Video and NBC as they will start their TV contracts after this season.
