ESPN’s Shams Charania announced on Saturday that guard Dru Smith has agreed to a three-year contract extension with the Miami Heat.
Due to injury, Smith, 27, has only played in 23 games and made one start in the previous two seasons. After missing much of the 2023–24 season due to an ACL injury, he lost a significant portion of the 2024–25 season due to a ruptured achilles. He shot 50.8% from the floor and averaged 6.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game when healthy at the beginning of the previous season.
Smith is re-signing with the Heat despite his bad luck with injuries.
Smith played with the Heat in the NBA summer league to start his career after going undrafted out of Missouri in 2021. For a large portion of his first two years in the league, he alternated between the Heat and the Sioux Falls Skyforce, their G League club. In January 2023, he signed a contract with the Nets, but the following summer, he rejoined the Heat. He is now expected to remain in Miami for a number of upcoming seasons.
