Cardinals Marvin Harrison Jr. Has Emergency Surgery

The Arizona Cardinals will be without their leading wide receiver, Marvin Harrison Jr., for at least this week’s matchup against the San Francisco 49ers after the star wide receiver underwent emergency surgery for appendicitis on Monday night.

Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon confirmed the news Wednesday, marking an unexpected and significant setback for Arizona’s offense, which was just beginning to find its rhythm.

Harrison, who has quickly established himself as a primary threat, leads the Cardinals with 34 receptions for 525 yards and four touchdowns this season. His absence leaves a major void in the receiving corps, which is already severely depleted.

Gannon’s announcement noted that Harrison will miss Sunday’s game, but offered no definitive timetable for his return, simply stating, “We’ll see.” The typical recovery for an appendectomy can range from two to four weeks, meaning the young receiver could miss a substantial portion of the remaining season.

The injury news compounds a challenging week for the Cardinals’ receiving unit:

  • Zay Jones was ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering a torn Achilles tendon last Sunday.
  • The team also confirmed that receiver Simi Fehoko will be placed on injured reserve with a wrist injury.

With Harrison, Jones, and Fehoko all sidelined, the Cardinals will lean heavily on Michael Wilson, Greg Dortch, and Xavier Weaver as the only healthy receivers on the active roster heading into a difficult contest against the NFC West rival 49ers.

Harrison had been a focal point of the offense, especially since the team’s recent shift at quarterback, and was coming off a performance where he tied a career high in targets against the Seahawks. Arizona now faces a scramble for offensive depth as they prepare for a critical division game.
