According to ESPN on Wednesday, the New York Giants are anticipated to start quarterback Jameis Winston against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
As the Giants resume practice on Wednesday afternoon, starter Jaxson Dart is in the concussion protocol and is unlikely to play, according to a source.
Winston’s first significant move under interim coach Mike Kafka, who took over after Brian Daboll was sacked on Monday, is to jump fellow veteran Russell Wilson on the depth chart. As the associate head coach and offensive coordinator this season, Kafka has collaborated closely with the quarterbacks.
Winston, 31, will be participating in his first Cleveland Browns game since Week 15 of the previous campaign.
In the offseason, he signed a two-year, $8 million contract with the Giants, but he was the third-stringer for the 2025 season, behind Wilson, who started in Week 1, and Dart, who took over in Week 4.
Next season, Winston will be the Giants’ backup behind Dart. Wilson agreed to a $10.5 million, one-year deal that ends at the end of the current campaign.
