“Patrick Beverley has no criminal record,” the statement read. “He cares deeply about his little sister—a young lady, a minor. Given that, when he unexpectedly found her alone in the home with an 18-year-old man in the middle of the night, he was understandably concerned, as any brother would be about his sister. However, we don’t believe what followed happened the way it’s been described, and we look forward to the opportunity to address that in court.”

Moments after the news broke, Beverley appeared to address the situation on social media, posting a cryptic message to his followers on X (formerly Twitter).

The statement from his attorney, later shared through the same account, provided the first public explanation connecting the family assault charge to the presence of the 18-year-old man in the home.
The third-degree felony charge is a serious offense in Texas, carrying a potential sentence of two to 10 years in state prison. Beverley, who last played in the NBA for the Milwaukee Bucks, has yet to serve a four-game suspension from the league stemming from a separate incident in May 2024 where he threw a basketball at fans during a playoff game.
