Why UCLA QB Nico Iamaleava is Seeking Revenge Against The Ohio State Buckeyes

When UCLA quarterback Nico Iamaleava runs onto the field at Ohio Stadium this Saturday for a primetime matchup against the No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes, he will be returning to the site of his final and arguably most frustrating game as a Tennessee Volunteer.

Iamaleava’s journey from Knoxville to Los Angeles this past offseason was one of the most notable storylines of the year, a move some say was directly sparked by the Volunteers’ lopsided loss to Ohio State in the College Football Playoff (CFP) quarterfinals last December.

The stage is set for a narrative-fueled homecoming, with Iamaleava and his Bruins facing the team and stadium that served as the catalyst for his departure.

The Playoff Catalyst: 42-17

Iamaleava’s final game for Tennessee came on Dec. 21, 2024, in the first round of the CFP, a contest the Buckeyes dominated 42-17. Playing in frigid conditions, the then-sophomore struggled through the air, completing just 14 of 31 passes for 104 yards. He carried the ball a career-high 20 times, showcasing a toughness that earned him respect from Ohio State coach Ryan Day, but the final score was decisive.

Iamaleava later admitted that the cold weather hindered his ability to warm up and that the Volunteers failed to show up against a tough opponent, a loss he said he “took to the chin.”

For a highly touted recruit who was reportedly negotiating a rework of his Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal, the poor performance and ensuing loss proved to be the breaking point.

The Transfer Saga and the New Chapter

The events that followed the defeat set Iamaleava on a rapid path out of Tennessee.

In April 2025, reports surfaced that the quarterback was in active contract negotiations with Tennessee regarding his NIL compensation. When an agreement could not be reached, the Volunteers announced they would be moving on from Iamaleava at the position. Days later, he announced his decision to transfer to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

While the reasons for his departure were likely complex—involving NIL, family influence, and reported dissatisfaction with the offensive system—the playoff loss to the Buckeyes served as the powerful bookend to his Tennessee career.

A Chance for Redemption

Now, Iamaleava brings his dual-threat ability back to Columbus, eager for a different outcome.

“I’m excited to catch those boys again,” Iamaleava said of the matchup, adding that he is hungry for redemption against the team that effectively ended his time in the SEC.

Though his UCLA tenure has been turbulent, marked by the firing of the head coach and offensive coordinator, Iamaleava has evolved into a legitimate rushing threat, leading the Bruins with 474 yards on the ground this season. His mobility will challenge an elite Ohio State defense, forcing them to contend with the same athleticism that Coach Day praised following their last meeting. For Iamaleava, this game is a chance to prove the investment in his talent was worthwhile and to reverse the narrative that began under those same stadium lights
