The fiancée of Cleveland Browns quarterback Dillon Gabriel faced criticism from fans Sunday after posting a social media caption appearing to mock the team’s latest loss.
Zo Caswell, who is engaged to Gabriel, posted a video to TikTok shortly after the Browns’ 26-8 defeat against the San Francisco 49ers. The video included the caption:
“Browns lost what’s new,” accompanied by a laughing emoji.
The post drew immediate scrutiny from fans noting that the game was started by rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders rather than Gabriel, who served as the backup. Sanders was making his first start for the team, which fell to a 3-9 record with the loss.
Commenters on the platform questioned Caswell’s support for the team. One user wrote:
“I don’t remember these captions when ya man was qb1,” while another expressed disappointment, stating she should “support this team weather [sic] he is in or not.”
Caswell later addressed the criticism in the comments section of her post, characterizing the caption as humor born from frustration.
“For everyone complaining about the caption, I obviously am cheering for the Browns,” Caswell wrote. “It’s clearly a joke. If we don’t laugh, we cry.”
The controversy comes amidst an ongoing quarterback competition in Cleveland. Following Sunday’s game, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski announced that Sanders would remain the starter for the upcoming matchup against the Tennessee Titans, leaving Gabriel in the backup role.
