Cooper Flagg left Wednesday night’s Mavericks vs. Nuggets game. His injury was described by the team as a left ankle sprain, and he did not play again.
While defending Denver forward Peyton Watson in the paint, the top selection in this year’s NBA draft rolled his ankle. At halftime, the Mavs announced that the 19-year-old star would not be returning to the game after Flagg had gone to the locker room.
During Dallas’s 113-105 victory over the Nets on Monday, he rolled his left ankle, but he came back and scored 27 points to lead the Mavs.
After 15 minutes of action on Wednesday, he finished the game against the Nuggets with six points on 3-for-9 shooting, one rebound, one assist, and a block. So far in his rookie season, the Duke product and new Mavericks star is averaging 19.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.3 steals per game.
With the exception of a game against the Knicks on November 19 due to illness, Flagg has played in every Mavs game this season. With the fourth pick in the draft and Flagg’s college classmate averaging 19.1 points per night for Charlotte, he is tied with Hornets rookie Kon Knueppel for the most points among NBA rookies.
If Flagg misses a significant amount of time, it would be a further setback for Dallas, which is currently without star big man Anthony Davis as he recovers from a hand injury and will be reassessed in six weeks amid trade speculations as the team attempts to develop around its young star.
