Dallas Mavericks forward PJ Washington accused his ex-girlfriend Brittany Renner of threatening to have him served with court papers during a nationally televised NBA game if he refused to consent to relocating their child custody case to California, court documents show.
Washington, 27, made the allegations in a filing in North Carolina, where the original custody agreement for their 4-year-old son, Paul III, was established. Renner, 33, a former “Basketball Wives” star, filed a separate case in Los Angeles in September 2025 seeking to increase monthly child support payments from $5,500 to $35,000, citing financial struggles after moving to California and lacking steady income.
According to the documents obtained by Us Weekly, Washington’s attorney described an email from Renner’s lawyer dated Nov. 14, 2025, outlining plans to purchase tickets to Mavericks games against the Los Angeles Lakers on Nov. 28 and the Clippers on Nov. 29. The email specified seats behind the visitor’s bench for the Lakers game at $2,317 each and courtside options for the Clippers matchup exceeding $2,000 per ticket, with intentions to buy multiple seats to ensure service could be executed.
Washington’s filing characterized the move as “blatant threats” and “fear tactics” designed to coerce him into agreeing to jurisdiction in California, where he claims he has no substantial ties. He argued the child was conceived in North Carolina, and the couple visited California only once briefly during their relationship. Washington’s team urged the judge not to reward such tactics and to deny the transfer motion.
Renner’s attorney, in the email, framed the potential service as a last resort to avoid escalating legal fees and negative publicity for Washington, setting a Nov. 18 deadline for him to sign a stipulation moving the case. Renner has stated in her California filing that the current support amount represents just 0.30% of Washington’s income and is insufficient for their son’s lifestyle in Los Angeles.
The former couple, who share joint custody under the North Carolina agreement, have been embroiled in the dispute since Renner’s relocation. Washington previously played for the Charlotte Hornets before joining the Mavericks. No ruling has been issued on the motion to dismiss the California case or the transfer request.
