Lindsey Vonn Confirms Participation in the Olympics Despite ACL Tear

Despite suffering a left knee injury in a collision four days ago, American skier Lindsey Vonn is “confident” that she can compete at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics starting this week.

On Tuesday, Vonn said that her left knee had “completely ruptured” ACL, bone bruises, and “plus meniscal damage.”

Vonn skied on Tuesday following three days of physical treatment and medical advice. Vonn stated:

“My knee is not swollen, and with the help of a knee brace, I am confident that I can compete on Sunday,”

“So this is not obviously what I had hoped for. I know what my chances were before the crash and I know my chances aren’t the same as it stands today but I know there’s still a chance. And as long as there’s a chance, I will try.

“I will do everything in my power to be in the starting gate.”

Vonn ended up in the safety nets after collapsing during a World Cup downhill in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, on Friday. She was transported to a hospital after skiing to the bottom of the course.

The 41-year-old Vonn was anticipated to be among the top stars of the Winter Games, which begin with the opening ceremony on Friday. Two days later, on Sunday, she will compete in her debut race in the women’s downhill. Vonn also intended to participate in the new team combined event and super-G.
