Mase On How His Son Quitting Basketball Mid-game To Be An Intellectual

When you think of Mase, you think Harlem, shiny suits, and that smooth 90s flow. You probably don’t think “middle school life coach.” But here we are.

According to Mase, his 12-year-old son who is already 6’2” because apparently genetics said “let’s fast forward” quit basketball mid-game. Yes, mid-game, not after the buzzer and not during halftime. Mid-dribble, mid-dream, mid-“future NBA contract.”

And why? Because the young giant decided he wants to be an intellectual.

Imagine being the coach, one second you’re calling a play, the next second your power forward is walking off the court like, “Actually, I choose books.” Somewhere a scout dropped his clipboard.

Mase told the story like a proud dad. He said his kids follow his vision for them until they discover their own. And when that happens? They pivot. Apparently without warning. Preferably during live sports.

It’s actually kind of deep. Mase has a vision, structured, disciplined and probably includes gym time, church, and a solid GPA. His kids follow that blueprint. No debates, no PowerPoints. Just vibes and obedience.

Until one day they wake up and say, “Plot twist.”

His son, standing 6’2” at 12, could easily be trending on basketball TikTok right now. Instead, he’s choosing intellect, which is a bold move in a world that hands out scholarships for vertical leaps.

But Mase doesn’t seem mad. If anything, he sounds impressed about his son’s vision.

Let’s be honest though. Quitting mid-game is dramatic. That’s main-character energy. That’s “I’ve just discovered philosophy” timing.

Still, there’s something refreshing about it. Not every tall kid has to chase a basketball. Not every rapper’s son has to chase fame. Some kids want books, some want business and some want both.

Mase seems cool with the switch as long as there is a vision, preferably one that doesn’t involve chaos.

So the moral of the story? Even if you’re 6’2” at 12 and built like a varsity legend, you’re allowed to change lanes.

Just maybe wait until after the fourth quarter next time.
