Internet drama has entered the chat again, and this time it involves 32-year-old influencer Paige Shiver and 40-year-old Sherrone Moore. Yes, that’s right. A situation that many people originally thought was just a regular adult relationship has suddenly taken a more “legal” turn.
According to Paige Shiver, Moore “took advantage of her youth.” Let that sentence marinate for a second. Youth at 32.
Now, nobody is saying people in their early 30s are ancient. Far from it, but the internet did what the internet always does, it immediately raised an eyebrow. Actually, several million eyebrows.
The story started circulating when Shiver began describing the relationship in a very different light than before. What many believed was a fully consensual situation between two adults is now being framed as something else entirely, and that’s where the speculation begins.
In her first public comments, Shiver accused the University of Michigan of failing to protect her from ‘years of manipulation, harassment, and exploitation.’
The statement, released Monday by Action Injury Law Group, claims a power imbalance created an environment where she felt pressured and unable to escape.
Her attorney, Andrew M. Stroth, told The Detroit News that Moore ‘took advantage of a younger, female employee’ and that leadership failed to act for years.
Shiver’s attorneys maintain that the ‘powerful head coach’ created an environment that should never occur at a prominent public university like Michigan.
‘Institutions entrusted with the education and safety of students and employees have a fundamental duty to ensure that power is never used to exploit or silence others,’ the statement said.
‘A thorough and transparent investigation into this conduct – and any related institutional failures – must occur. Our client came forward at tremendous personal cost because she believes that silence allows abuse of power to continue.’
Why do most women accuse men of taking advantage of them when a consensual relationship goes south?
Stroth didn’t go into detail on the dynamics of the relationship, but said that because Moore was fired over the affair, it was clear it should never have happened.
‘Leadership knew and failed to act to protect her,’ he said. ‘This isn’t something that happened overnight, it happened over a long period of time.’
The explosive remarks follow a Friday hearing where Moore saw three felony counts dropped, including a home invasion charge with a five-year prison limit.
The 40-year-old instead pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor charges of trespassing and malicious use of a telecommunications device in a private relationship.
While the plea could result in six months of jail time at his April 14 sentencing, Moore’s defense team expects the agreement to lead to no time behind bars.
The controversy centers on an ‘inappropriate relationship’ that led to Moore’s firing and arrest in December following a harrowing 911 call from Shiver’s home.
One side says there was an imbalance that mattered, the other side says two grown people dated and things didn’t work out. Somewhere in the middle is the truth, which usually refuses to show up on social media comment sections.
For now, the internet will keep debating, lawyers may or may not get involved and everyone will keep asking the same sarcastic question.
Since when did 32 count as “youth”?
