Love is in the air. Marriage? Not so fast. Cam Newton has once again entered the chat, and this time, he brought relationship advice nobody asked for.
During a recent conversation, Cam explained why he cannot marry his girlfriend and baby mama, Jasmin Brown. His reason? He does not want to be “held hostage.” Yes, hostage.
Newton began by saying, “I want to be around who want to be around me,” before adding, “So, if that’s five, if it’s six, if it’s one,” he said, referring to women.
“I like volunteers. I don’t like hostages,” Newton added. “I just want you to be happy, and if I’m the person that’s bringing you happiness, you can have marriage with no commitment, and you don’t have to have marriage to have a commitment.”
The former Carolina Panthers star told the podcast host he’d be okay if he never got married, and reiterated, “I don’t think it to be anything. I want people around me who want to be around me and I want them around me.”
Newton also mentioned concern over a marriage becoming a “gift-giving contest” and pondered, “Are we doing life together or is this a competition? So you’re basically saying if I don’t give you a ring, you’re not going to love me as much.”
“You can have a ring with no love and love with no ring,” added Newton.
Still, calling marriage “hostage” energy is bold. That’s the kind of comment that will live forever on the internet. Screenshots never retire.
At the end of the day, relationships are personal, every couple makes their own rules. Some want rings, some want freedom and some want both.
As for Cam? He’s playing the long game.
