A Texas judge on Monday extended the probation of Patrick Mahomes Sr., the father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, by two years after he was accused of violating terms by consuming alcohol, allowing him to avoid additional prison time.
Mahomes Sr., 55, a former Major League Baseball pitcher, had been held in the Smith County Jail since Feb. 3 following the alleged violation detected by his ankle monitor on New Year’s Day. The device registered a transdermal alcohol content level of 0.045%, prompting prosecutors to seek revocation of his five-year probation stemming from a 2024 felony driving while intoxicated conviction.
During the March 9 hearing in Smith County, a hair follicle test for alcohol came back negative, and Mahomes Sr. did not admit to drinking. The judge opted not to revoke the probation but modified it, extending the term to seven years total and requiring Mahomes Sr. to complete a 16-week outpatient treatment program.
Mahomes Sr. was sentenced to 30 days in jail but received credit for time already served and was released Monday.
The case marks the latest legal issue for Mahomes Sr., who pleaded guilty in August 2024 to his third DWI charge, avoiding a potential 10-year prison sentence and $10,000 fine by accepting the initial probation with one year of intensive supervision. He has been arrested at least three times for DWI and has logged 13 stays in the Smith County Jail.
Mahomes Sr. played 11 seasons in MLB for teams including the Minnesota Twins, New York Mets and Texas Rangers. His son, Patrick Mahomes II, has led the Chiefs to multiple Super Bowl appearances. No statements from Mahomes Sr. or his family were immediately available regarding the hearing.
