Questions Surround Suns’ Dillon Brooks’ DUI Arrest After Bodycam Video Release

Bodycam footage of Phoenix Suns forward Dillon Brooks’ arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence, released Friday, has fueled online skepticism about the validity of the charges, with social media users pointing to the player’s sobriety test results and the officer’s observations.

Brooks, 30, was pulled over around 1 a.m. March 6 near Scottsdale and Thunderbird roads after an officer reported he failed to maintain his lane six times. The footage, obtained by Arizona’s Family and shared widely on X, shows the officer noting a strong marijuana odor in Brooks’ vehicle, describing it as smelling “like a dispensary.” Brooks denied recent marijuana use, stating it had been six months, and confirmed no drugs were in the car.

Despite blowing a 0.00 on a breathalyzer test — indicating no alcohol impairment — Brooks was arrested at 1:33 a.m. on two DUI-related counts: impaired to the slightest degree and DUI involving drugs or metabolites. He was booked at Scottsdale City Jail and released around 3:30 a.m. A source close to Brooks told ESPN the incident was marijuana-related, but no charges were ultimately filed in some reports, though police confirmed the citations.

The video also captures Brooks questioning the stop, noting officers followed him closely and suggesting similar lane movements are common. He mentioned recent hand surgery when asked about his hand during handcuffing.

Social media reactions on X highlighted perceived inconsistencies. User @HeHateMe213 posted: “How can you get arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence after blowing a 0.” @JohnnieHolden31 wrote: “Blew a 0.0…This is garbage and it will get thrown out. All the headlines and the bullshat he has to deal with for this? Total waste of resource.” Another user, @jsnc127, questioned: “Cooperated fully, blew a big fat zero on sobriety test, his car smells like weed but did they find any? Need to see more footage.”

@FNburneraccount added: “I can’t stand Dillon Brooks and I hope he takes the sheriffs office to court. This is nonsense. He blew 0, go away dude.” @Diego4Justice suggested racial profiling: “That case is going to be dismissed eventually. Odds are Brooks was pulled over for DWB.” (DWB refers to “driving while Black.”)

The Suns issued a brief statement acknowledging the incident: “We are aware of the situation involving Dillon Brooks and are gathering more information.” Brooks, in his first season with Phoenix after stints with Memphis and Houston.

Scottsdale police did not immediately respond to requests for additional comment on the footage or charges. In Arizona, DUI laws allow for arrests based on suspicion of drug impairment, even without alcohol, if officers observe signs like erratic driving or odors. No drugs were reported found in the vehicle, per available details.

The case remains under review, with potential for dismissal if further tests, such as blood draws, show no impairment.
