Texans Release Jimmie Ward Following Fiancee Calling Him a Meth Head

The NFL offseason just added another headline nobody had on their bingo card. The Houston Texans have officially released veteran safety Jimmie Ward following sexual assault accusations made by his fiancée. And just like that, his time in Houston is over.

Now let’s unpack this.

Ward, 34, didn’t play a single snap for the Texans in 2025. Not one, zero. He missed the entire season due to a foot injury he suffered late in the 2024 campaign. So technically, fans were already asking, “Wait, he’s still on the roster?”

Then came the accusations, and the team clearly decided it was time to move on.

The Texans cutting Ward reportedly saves them about $750k against the salary cap. In NFL terms, that’s not exactly couch-cushion money, but it’s not blockbuster cash either. Still, every dollar counts when you’re building a roster.

He was arrested in June 2025 on third-degree family assault after allegedly choking his fiancee – with whom he was in a relationship for several years – in what she said was a meth-fueled rage where he allegedly threatened to kill her.

She then later filed a civil lawsuit seeking damages of $20million and claiming that Ward was ‘under the influence of methamphetamines, specifically, crystal meth,’ when he slapped and choked her before forcing her into a sex act.’

Ward, however, did not face any criminal charges in the end. A grand jury declined to indict him and didn’t find probable cause that Ward committed the crimes against the woman.

The Texans said at the time that they would let the law take its course with Ward and the team has not issued any further explanation over their decision on Monday to part ways with him.

Given Ward’s injury history, however, the news will not be a surprise to many Texans fans. According to KPRC 2 Houston, Ward is now considering if he wants to keep on playing in the NFL.

It’s also a reminder that availability matters in the league. If you’re injured for a full season and not producing, your roster spot is already shaky. Add serious accusations into the mix, and the leash gets even shorter.

The NFL is a business. Cold, direct and ruthless. Teams will move on fast if they feel it protects the locker room, the brand, or the balance sheet.

For Ward, the road ahead is uncertain. At 34, coming off a full missed season and facing allegations, a comeback won’t be easy.

For the Texans, it’s about turning the page and focusing on football.
