Some Easter egg hunts come with chocolate, bright colors, and excited kids running around with baskets. And then there are the ones that take a very unexpected turn, like the kind that ends with police tape instead of candy wrappers during Easter egg hunt.
Authorities have launched an investigation after a family discovered what may be human remains during an Easter egg hunt on Sunday. Yes, you read that right. Somewhere between “check behind the bushes” and “I think I found one,” things took a sharp turn into a crime scene nobody put on the activity list.
What started as a cheerful family outing quickly shifted into something far less festive. One moment, everyone is hunting for plastic eggs filled with sweets, the next moment, someone is calling the police instead of calling out “I found one!” That’s not exactly the kind of surprise anyone packs for a holiday weekend.
Police were called to DeForest Park on the 5900 block of De Forest Avenue at approximately 5 p.m. after a family looking for eggs found what appeared to be a small skull in the ground.
The Long Beach Police Department didn’t provide details on who made the horrifying discovery, KCBS reported.
Aerial footage obtained by Fox11 shows what appears to be a skull protruding out of the ground with authorities nearby as they clear the scene.
Family members told CBS that along with the small skull, which they think belongs to a child, there were other small bones nearby.
“Due to the circumstances, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office is responding to the scene,” police told the outlet.
Authorities said they were unable to give an update until they get results from the medical office.
“It hurts because if it’s a child, that’s very sad,” Long Beach resident Jessica Flores told KTLA.
For now, what was supposed to be a day of celebration has become a serious matter for investigators. The Easter eggs may have been hidden well, but this discovery was definitely not part of the game plan.
