Brandon Clarke, a seven-year NBA veteran who spent his entire career with the Memphis Grizzlies, died Monday in a San Fernando Valley home after a medical emergency, authorities said. Los Angeles officials are investigating the 29-year-old’s death as a possible overdose after drug paraphernalia was found at the scene.

Paramedics with the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a 911 call reporting the emergency shortly after 5 p.m. and pronounced Clarke dead upon arrival, according to the NBC Los Angeles report. An autopsy is pending to determine the cause and manner of death.

Clarke’s agency, Priority Sports, confirmed his death Tuesday. The Grizzlies released a statement expressing sorrow over the loss of a player they described as both a strong teammate and person.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke,” the team said. “Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten. We express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

The Canadian-born forward was selected 21st overall by the Grizzlies in the 2019 NBA Draft out of Gonzaga. He earned All-Rookie First Team honors in 2020 and appeared in 309 regular-season games, averaging 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds. Clarke played in just two games this season in December because of injuries.

The death comes weeks after Clarke’s April arrest in Arkansas, where authorities said he led police on a high-speed chase and was charged with speeding and possession of a controlled substance.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver made the following statement:

“We are devastated to learn of the passing of Brandon Clarke.  As one of the longest-tenured members of the Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with enormous passion and grit.  Our thoughts and sympathies are with Brandon’s family, friends and the Grizzlies organization.”

Thoughts and prayers go out to Clarke’s family and friends.
