LeBron James Won’t Accept Any “Discount” for Lakers Contract Offer ; Wants to Max Out His Last Deal

LeBron James, the four-time NBA champion does not have a deal signed with the Lakers going into the summer for the first time since moving to Los Angeles, which could lead to one of the biggest stories of the NBA offseason.

On Wednesday’s episode of The Hoop Collective, Brian Windhorst stated:

“The LeBron side, from what I am told, would like the Lakers to come and say, ‘LeBron, here’s our plan for you. Here’s what we’re offering,’”

“And if they’re offering less than the max, here’s why: ‘Because we’re going to use this cap space to sign these players, and this is where you slot in.’”

According to reports, the scenario involves more than just financial negotiations. James has historically been willing to sacrifice financially, but only when it directly improves a team’s ability to compete for championships.

As stated by Yahoo Sports:

“This has always been LeBron’s mindset when it comes to taking a pay cut,” “He did it for Miami when he was part of that Big Three and he was reportedly willing to take a pay cut for the Lakers a couple of years back when they were pursuing players such as Klay Thompson.”

“LeBron won’t just take a discount to help the Lakers or any other team out. It has to make basketball sense for both parties,”

This strategy was also evident in the Lakers’ 2024 summer, when James allegedly agreed to a lower contract in order to prevent the franchise from turning into a financial second tier.
