Two Ohio brothers just proved that watching YouTube videos can teach you many things in life. Meet Zubair Al Zubair and Muzzammil Al Zubair, the brothers who allegedly built an entire fake empire based on luxury, lies, and vibes. The pair were sentenced this week to 24 and 23 years in prison after prosecutors said they helped carry out fraud schemes totaling around $21 million.
And honestly, the details sound less like a court case and more like a rejected Netflix script.
According to authorities, the brothers posed as Middle Eastern royalty and financial elites while living like rap video extras on unlimited credit. Prosecutors said Zubair falsely claimed he was married to a princess from the United Arab Emirates, while Muzzammil reportedly claimed to be a hedge fund manager despite learning finance from YouTube videos.
Imagine getting investment advice from a man whose qualifications were basically “I watched three tutorials and subscribed to a podcast.”
The fake luxury lifestyle was apparently very real-looking. Authorities said the brothers surrounded themselves with private jets, luxury watches, expensive cars, firearms, and even a custom-made gold-plated AK-47-style rifle.
Federal officials said the brothers took lavish shopping trips to places like Aspen, Miami, London, Madrid, and Bucharest using chartered private jets. Basically, they were living every Instagram influencer fantasy while prosecutors say victims were getting robbed blind behind the scenes.
One of the reported victims was Zubair’s former girlfriend from the UAE, who allegedly lost around $737K, which is an incredibly expensive way to discover your boyfriend may not actually be royal.
Another major scheme involved the brothers allegedly bilking a Chinese investor out of nearly $18 million by falsely claiming they owned an industrial complex and would bring a cryptocurrency business to the site, the outlet said.
To facilitate their crimes, prosecutors said the pair corrupted Smedley with expensive gifts and meals, cash payments, Cleveland Browns suite tickets, prized Japanese wagyu beef, cigars, upscale dining and promises of future employment.
In exchange, prosecutors said Smedley abused his city position to assist the brothers.
He was accused of attempting to secure state funding for their businesses, providing official city letterhead, issuing them police credentials, and formally appointing Zubair as an “International Economic Advisor” for East Cleveland.
Following a two-week trial, all three men were convicted by a federal jury of conspiracy to commit bribery involving programs receiving federal funds, conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud and Hobbs Act conspiracy.
In the end, the flashy lifestyle finally crashed hard. Instead of private jets and designer shopping trips, the brothers will now be behind bars for decades.
