Teacher Katelyn Dawn Schronce Gets ‘Light’ Sentence For Having Relations With A Minor

Katelyn Dawn Schronce is heading to prison, but many people online think the sentence barely counts as a timeout.

The 33-year-old former substitute teacher from North Carolina was sentenced after pleading guilty to indecent liberties with a child in a case involving a teenage student. Originally, Schronce had been facing far more serious charges, including statutory rape, which could have landed her behind bars for up to 30 years.

Instead, she struck a plea deal and received a sentence of between 20 and 33 months in prison. Yes, less than three years.

And people online are furious, with many arguing that if the genders were reversed, the public reaction, and possibly the punishment, would have looked very different.

She was also banned from having contact with the 15-year-old victim, who was not identified.

Schronce was immediately fired after school officials learned of her disturbing behavior — just six months into her teaching gig.

Cops didn’t release any details about her victim, but school officials previously said that “there is no indication … the charges are connected to her employment in our district.”

“The safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority,” Catawba County Schools said.

Schronce’s guilty plea means she avoided the risk of a trial and the possibility of a much harsher punishment. That is often how plea deals work. Prosecutors secure a conviction, defendants avoid maximum penalties, and the public argues endlessly on the internet afterward.

Still, many people feel the outcome leaves more questions than satisfaction, because when headlines mention possible decades in prison but the final sentence ends up being closer to two years, people are naturally going to wonder what happened between point A and point B.

One thing is certain though: Schronce’s teaching career is over, her name is permanently attached to the case, and the internet is absolutely not letting this story go quietly anytime soon.
