Third baseman Tre Phelps and Georgia baseball coach Wes Johnson were both ejected on Sunday during the Athens Regional final against Liberty.
After hitting a two-run home run to put Georgia ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Phelps was tossed for taunting while he was running the bases. Johnson left the dugout and got into a fight with the umpires before being dismissed.
After winning the game 6-1, the Bulldogs will move on to the super regionals. Speaking to the media following the game, Johnson stated:
“For the record, Tre’s family was sitting up in the stands,” “Tre was waving at his family. The umpires, whatever, I’m not an umpire. They thought he was talking to the dugout.”
Johnson explained that the Bulldogs cannot file an appeal, therefore Phelps will have to miss Georgia’s next game. Johnson can coach the following game and is not subject to any more penalties.
Georgia had only managed one hit against Liberty starter Cooper Harrington prior to the play. In the end, Harrington struck out six, issued zero walks, and allowed two earned runs on three hits. On the Flames’ bullpen, the Bulldogs scored four runs.
Phelps had a.500 on-base percentage going into Sunday’s game after going 1-for-6 (.167) in the Athens Regional, earning two walks and being hit by two pitches.
The Liberty coach didn’t even know what Tre Phelps said to his dugout
because he didn’t say anything to his dugout.
Coach still got so upset he ran out crying to the umps. pic.twitter.com/0Sf6P6N8vs
