What started as a beautiful day for 24-year-old police officer Fred Marsh ended in heartbreaking tragedy.

The Rogers Police Department officer had just proposed to the love of his life, Hailey, on Saturday morning. The couple were celebrating one of life’s biggest moments. They were engaged and had a future to look forward to. Then everything changed.

Marsh and Hailey later headed out canoeing with friends on Missouri’s Elk River. What was supposed to be a fun day on the water quickly turned into a nightmare when the river became dangerous.

According to reports, Hailey ended up in trouble in the raging water. Marsh did what many people would hope a loved one would do in that terrifying moment. He tried to save her.

The young officer entered the water in an attempt to rescue his fiancée. Sadly, he drowned during the effort.

He proposed to my daughter on the day he passed away, early that morning, and he made her his fiancée,” the fiancée’s mother Sheryl Padgett told 40/29.

The joyful celebration quickly turned into heartbreak when Hailey entered the river and began struggling against the powerful current.

The young couple had been together for three years.

Padgett said she had formed a close bond with Marsh after the two connected over devastating personal losses.

“I lost my only son, four years ago, to a fatal accident in my hometown so we instantly made a connection and a bond. I called him son, and he called me mama,” she also added.

Marsh had spent his career serving and protecting others. On this day, he was not wearing his police uniform and responding to a call. He was simply a young man trying to save the woman he had just asked to marry.

Talk about a day taking the most heartbreaking turn imaginable.

Fred Marsh’s story is ultimately one of love, bravery, and sacrifice. He proposed to his fiancée that morning. Hours later, he gave everything trying to save her.
