Imagine finally deciding to open up, only to realize the person you trusted treated your private thoughts like the latest team newsletter. That’s basically how things went for former NBA star Blake Griffin.

During an appearance on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast with Lil Dicky, Kristin Batalucco, and Benny Blanco, Griffin shared a story that had listeners shaking their heads.

According to Blake, his first experience with a sports psychologist was an absolute disaster.

Instead of feeling supported, he says the psychologist completely betrayed his trust. That’s kind of the opposite of the assignment.

He says the shrink came over to his place after practice one day and they chatted … and then the shrink turned around and called up Blake‘s coach to spill about their convo.

Blake says he took a shower after their chat and when he was done, he checked his phone to see he had a missed call and voicemail from the psychologist.

He listened to the message … and the shrink had accidentally called and left a voicemail meant for Blake’s coach, recapping their supposedly private chat.

For Griffin, the story wasn’t about getting revenge, it was about explaining why he struggled to trust the process after that experience.

The good news is that conversations about mental health in sports continue to grow. Players today are more willing to speak up, ask for help, and encourage teammates to do the same.

As for Blake, he gave everyone one unforgettable lesson: if you’re going to guard someone’s secrets, maybe don’t play defense like a traffic cone.
