A peek of the real story behind Sylvester Stallone‘s will to create Rocky and the astounding risk that turned him from a struggling actor into a Hollywood icon can be found in the first teaser for I Play Rocky.

The biographical drama, starring Anthony Ippolito as a young Stallone, tells the story of the actor’s journey from poverty to penning the Oscar-winning script that started one of the most successful movie franchises.

Despite pressure from studios to choose a more established actor, the teaser follows Stallone as he refuses to sell the Rocky script unless he is let to feature in the movie himself.

In the trailer, Stallone declares:

“If they want the script, they’ve got to take me,”

The movie also shows the personal hardships Stallone endured before to his big break, such as money problems and constant rejection while pursuing his goal of being a leading man.

I Play Rocky examines “the creation of one of the most iconic underdog stories in film history” while emphasizing the tenacity that characterized Stallone’s early career, according to the official synopsis.

Nicholas Turturro, Daniel Sauli, Elizabeth Masucci, Joe Leo Fine, and Lillo Brancato are among the supporting cast members of Peter Farrelly’s film.
