Los Angeles Sparks forward Dearica Hamby shared a screenshot Monday of a racist text message sent to her phone, prompting social media users to rapidly identify the sender through reverse lookups.
Hamby, a three-time WNBA All-Star, 2022 champion and Jordan Brand athlete, posted the image on X with the caption “Anyone know this number?” The screenshot showed an iMessage from the Florida number (561) 542-**** that read in part “Dirty ass n*gger. They should put you in a zoo. Animal,” accompanied by a monkey emoji. The message was timestamped earlier that morning.

Users quickly reverse-searched the number and shared details linking it to Jason William Wehrenberg, listed in public records as a 45-year-old MAGA Republican of Lantana, Florida (near West Palm Beach). Screenshots circulated of a Cash App profile under the handle associated with the name Jason Wehrenberg and of Florida voter registration information for Jason William Wehrenberg in Lantana. Multiple replies to Hamby’s post named him and referenced the public records within minutes of her original post.

The original post drew strong engagement and widespread condemnation of the message’s explicitly racist and dehumanizing language. Several users noted concern that the sender had obtained Hamby’s personal phone number.
Hamby, 32, is in her fourth season with the Sparks after earlier winning a title with the Las Vegas Aces. She has averaged 14.8 points and 7.1 rebounds per game in 2026 while starting regularly for Los Angeles.
Online racial harassment of athletes, particularly Black women in the WNBA, has been a recurring issue as the league’s visibility has grown. Hamby’s post is the latest public example of players documenting and sharing such messages.
As of Monday afternoon, there was no public response from Wehrenberg or confirmation of any police report or further action.
