The Los Angeles Lakers’ controlling owner, Jeanie Buss, has petitioned the Los Angeles County Superior Court to prevent her five siblings from selling the team’s ownership stake.
Buss would no longer be able to manage the brand as she has since her father passed away in 2013 as a result of the possible sale.
The petition, which aims to prevent her five siblings from voting to sell the family’s 17.8% ownership in the team, is not only based on legal considerations. Additionally, it is an assault on their attempts to do so.
She charges them with engaging in “devious behavior” and attempting to execute a “scheme” to get around her and betray the family’s confidence.
Additionally, according to Jeanie Buss, three of her siblings—Jim, Johnny, and Jesse—should be found in contempt of court, while her other two siblings—Joey and Janie—should provide an explanation for why they shouldn’t.
The Los Angeles Dodgers’ controlling owner, Mark Walter, decided to sell the Lakers to venture investor Josh Kushner and former Disney CEO Bob Iger at a $12.5 billion price on August 12, sparking a long-running family conflict.
In a document submitted to the court, Jeanie Buss’s attorney, Adam Streisand, stated that on August 17, ESPN claimed that all six Buss siblings had voted to sell the team and that Jeanie Buss was “out” as the team’s controlling owner.
