Lonzo Ball is looking back at his NBA journey and admitting that one decision still bothers him.
Lonzo says he regrets listening to his father, LaVar Ball, and not getting an agent when he entered the NBA. Apparently, there are some moments when even the loudest dad in sports should be told, “Thanks, Dad. I got it from here.”

“I was just following my pops and doing what I was told… If i could go back, I would get an agent, be in the meetings myself, do what I wanted to do. I didn’t like the shoes, I addressed that I didn’t like the shoe’s, but then we would get into an argument. It would be like ‘If you didn’t wear the shoes, you’re going against family type sh*t’… The shoe wasn’t a basketball shoe bro. It wasn’t ready to be used. I tried to play in it, but it would rip and pop out every quarter.”
Lonzo now believes he should have taken more control of his own career.
One of his biggest regrets was not having an agent to help him navigate the business side of basketball. An agent could have handled negotiations and offered advice while Lonzo focused on playing.
Instead, he followed the family plan, and then there were the shoes.
Lonzo revealed that he used to get into arguments with LaVar over wearing Big Baller Brand shoes during NBA games. Lonzo felt the shoes were not ready for competitive basketball.
That is quite the awkward family meeting.
“S–t, I was torn, bro. Because one, yeah, you living a grown man life, but at the end of the day, you’re only 19 years old,” Lonzo said. “And the way I was raised was like a blessing and a curse, if you will, because, like, I never really broke away from my pops.”
“I always looked at him as the leader of the house. You feel me? So I always looked up to him. I was told, ‘Look after my brothers.’ So that’s how kind of the chain went. So I felt like when I had gotten drafted, I was just doing that. You know, listening to my pops, you know, doing this and that, and that’s what it was,” he continued.
The Big Baller Brand experiment became one of the wildest stories surrounding the Ball family. LaVar wanted to build a family sports empire and Lonzo became the face of the basketball side of it.
But playing professional basketball is different from shooting around at the local gym. NBA players need equipment they can trust. One bad shoe can turn a highlight into an injury report very quickly.
Lonzo’s comments suggest he eventually realized that being a professional athlete requires making some decisions for yourself.
