Lonzo Ball pushed back Wednesday after a viral podcast clip was framed as his NBA retirement, saying he is still waiting on a team and that reports he had walked away were news to him.
“I retired? News to me lol cuz I’m still waiting for a call… NBA season long,” Ball wrote on X.
The clarification came hours after highlight accounts treated a conversation with Gilbert Arenas as a farewell. A clip posted by @ayekeeno — “Lonzo Ball confirms he’s officially done with basketball while reflecting on his NBA career and everything he went through with injuries” — drew more than 760,000 views and set off a wave of tribute posts.
Ball, 28, a free agent and the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 draft, did talk about unfinished business and gratitude. He did not say he was retiring.
“I think I left it all on the court, and honestly, everything in my life stems from hoops,” he said. “I’m thankful I got the opportunity to play professionally for 9 years. I don’t think I ever got to my peak, and that sucks, but at the same time there’s people that don’t have meals at night to eat. That’s how I look at the world.”

That language was enough. NBC Sports, The Spun, ClutchPoints and Basketball Forever posted versions of the same story: Ball retiring at 28 after knee injuries derailed a career that never reached the peak fans expected. ClutchPoints called it “BREAKING.” Basketball Forever said he was “officially retiring … due to his career-altering knee injury.”

Ball’s reply split the timeline in two. The first half was a public memorial. The second half was an argument over whether anyone had actually listened.
“All dude said was he felt like he never could reach his potential and everyone acted like he retired,” one user wrote under Ball’s denial.
“I listened to the clip and said he did not in any way say he’s retired. That’s wild how people run with stuff,” another added.
A third put it more bluntly: “Trying to understand how y’all got a retirement announcement out of that Lonzo Ball clip. He didn’t say anything close to that.”
