Troy Aikman Has Beef With Joe Buck After Buck Got a Contract Extension and He Didn’t

Longtime NFL broadcast partners Joe Buck and Troy Aikman had an argument in the booth ahead of Monday night’s Bills-Rams game, according to a report from Front Office Sports, as tension has grown over their differing contract situations with ESPN.

Buck recently agreed to a new six-year extension with the network worth approximately $108 million that keeps him as the play-by-play voice of “Monday Night Football” through the network’s next Super Bowl in 2031, The Athletic reported last month. Aikman, whose five-year, $90 million deal expires after Super Bowl LXI in February, has not yet received a formal extension offer.

On Monday night at SoFi Stadium — the site of this season’s Super Bowl — Buck “broke the ice” on the unspoken strain between the two, a source told Front Office Sports’ Ryan Glasspiegel. The exchange escalated into an argument that ultimately de-escalated before kickoff. The pair then called the overtime game without any visible issues; viewers would not have known anything was amiss, according to the report. An ESPN spokesperson declined to comment.

Buck and Aikman are in their 25th season together, the longest-running booth pairing in NFL history. They spent two decades at Fox before ESPN signed both away in 2022 to stabilize its “Monday Night Football” coverage after years of turnover. In the previous round of negotiations, Aikman reached a deal first, with Buck following weeks later.

Aikman has said publicly that he expected his own situation to be resolved before the season. In a September interview, he noted he had never entered the final year of a contract since signing with the Dallas Cowboys as a player. He has also indicated that Buck’s new deal would factor into his thinking and that he wants to continue working with his longtime partner.

The reported friction comes as ESPN prepares for its first Super Bowl broadcast in February. Front Office Sports has previously noted that delaying formal talks with Aikman risks signaling ambivalence about retaining him, particularly given the chemistry the duo has built over more than two decades. Potential landing spots for Aikman if the sides part ways have been discussed in media circles, including openings or flexibility at other networks.

Neither Buck nor Aikman has publicly addressed the reported tension or the pregame argument. They are scheduled to call this week’s “Monday Night Football” matchup between the Commanders and 49ers.
