The Philadelphia Eagles are adding more depth to their running back corps, which already includes star LeSean McCoy and grizzly vet Darren Sproles.
According to the team’s official website, they’ve acquired speedster Kenjon Barner, 25, from the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a conditional seventh-round draft choice in 2015.
Eagles head coach Chip Kelly (who had great success with Barner at Oregon) had this to say of his new running back:
“Kenjon will hopefully bring some depth to both our running back and return positions. He’s obviously a guy I know really well from Oregon, where he had a very productive career. He has a lot of speed, explosiveness and had a knack for making some really big plays. But our plan with him right now is get him in Philadelphia as soon as we can and plug him in at running back and returner and let him compete.”
Under Kelly, the 5’9 185lb Barner finished his collegiate career second in team history with 3,623 rushing yards and 41 rushing touchdowns. He was the Panthers’ sixth-round choice in 2013 and appeared in eight regular season games and one playoff game last year.
