Canelo Alvarez will fight for the 3rd time in 2014 and his next opponent will most likely be former champion Joshua Clottey.
Clottey isn’t the biggest name for Canelo but it gives him the possibility to notch a highlight reel KO and expand his budding legacy. The UFC will host a huge PPV in Las Vegas the weekend of December 6th, so moving the fight to San Antonio would work out perfectly for Canelo. San Antonio still allows his extremely loyal Mexican fan base to support him.
Canelo’s manager Edison Reynoso had this to say about the fight:
“I think this week we will practically define everything…the opponent, the venue, the date, and the television deal.”
It’s interesting that he included the TV deal. Usually Canelo is locked in to Showtime boxing but rumours have surfaced stating that Canelo is considering fighting on HBO. This may be the latest jab by Golden Boy owner Osacr De La Hoya towards the execs at Showtime.
It seems like it’s only a matter of time before Golden Boy and Top Rank both share HBO and Showtime gets cut out entirely.
This should be an easy fight for Canelo and the victory should spring board him to a fight against Cotto or Marquez next year.
