Excuses, excuses.
If you’re anything like me you’re just about good and tired of even hearing about this fight that’ll probably never happen. Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao are costing themselves “Super Fight” status more and more every passing year. Just when we were thrown a small morsel of progress in the fight FINALLY being made; the Mayweather camp is throwing a soaking wet blanket on the embers of hope. Chris Williams of Boxing News 24/7 fills us in on the details:
Mayweather responded to the Pacquiao fight rumors to Fighthype.com, saying “All lies. You know better than that!” When I heard Pacquiao and Arum talking about the Mayweather fight, I didn’t believe it for a second, because Mayweather has already made himself pretty clear about what Pacquiao needs to do in order to get a fight against him and thus far he hasn’t done what Mayweather has asked him to. Mayweather mentioned that if Pacquiao leaves Top Rank when his contract is up with them then there could possibly be a fight against him. Mayweather also said that Pacquiao has unfinished business with Juan Manuel Marquez that he needs to clear up first before they could take about a fight between them. Pacquiao took care of his Tim Bradley problem, but Pacquiao still needs to avenge his loss to Marquez before he can talk about a Mayweather fight.
It’s completely beyond me why this fight hasn’t happened yet. Boxing fans have wanted to see this…I repeat, THIS fight for years now and instead they’re served up fillers for both fighters bout after bout, most having their crowning moment in the ring at that point. These two have traded subtle and not so subtle insults and insinuations that it’s the other’s fault the fight hasn’t happened, yet the true loser in the situation is the sport of boxing.
Both Mayweather and Pacquiao were in a position at one time to catapult boxing back to the forefront of American sports interests, however their childlike attitudes have all but cost boxing one of the greatest events it’ll never get to witness.
