Sergio Martinez has seen a fair share of ups and downs in his career, but at this point the negatives heavily outweigh the positives.
Martinez has only fought 4 times in the past 3 years and his latest fight was regarded as one of the worst of his career. He looked old, worn out, and slow vs. Miguel Cotto; whom honestly was thought to be washed up just a few years ago. Sergio hasn’t spoken much since the loss but it is now being said that he may never lace up his gloves again.
Sergio is contemplating retirement according to the RingTV:
“My medical studies are done. They are talking about a new surgery on my knee”, said Martinez.
“If they decide to (perform the surgery), I would have to quit boxing. If not, we can initiate a treatment, which would involve a special preparation and a strengthening of the area that protects the knee. It would be a very intense work, very serious and very difficult to achieve as well. I will then try to compete once again.”
It doesn’t seem as though Sergio seems very optimistic about the situation.
“I would have to look into the situation, because I still have a life after boxing. I would have to evaluate the possible damages looking towards the future,” said the fighter. “I don’t want to retire after losing a fight. I don’t feel frustrated. Fights are won and lost, even though I was sure I was going to win, as always. If I feel that I can do it, I will come back. If not, I won’t.”
It’s a sad way for a former champion to go out but very few boxing stories have happy endings.
