It sounds like Everett Golson is nearing a decision on where he wants to spend his final year of eligibility in 2015, and it is being reported that the former Notre Dame quarterback is leaning towards Florida State.
Golson has been reported as being interested in several schools in the Southeast region of the country, but due to an SEC rule with graduate transfers, Florida State could end up benefiting and landing Golson. It is also being reported that Golson’s decision could come as soon as Monday.
Everett Golson was impressed with Florida State during his visit this week and could be leaning toward spending his final his season in Tallahassee as a graduate transfer.
Golson met with coach Jimbo Fisher on Monday, and Fisher is eager to add the former Notre Dame quarterback, according to sources. Golson is set to graduate from Notre Dame Sunday and is expected to announce his decision Monday.
Golson, who is looking to play closer to his hometown of Myrtle Beach, S.C., also visited Florida and Georgia, according to reports. Alabama reportedly also has shown an interest.
Rising redshirt junior Sean Maguire emerged from the Seminoles’ spring practice as the leading candidate to replace Jameis Winston and early enrollee De’Andre Johnson had a solid spring and an impressive spring game. But Fisher said this week he does not believe adding Golson would upset chemistry.
“You have to be upfront with everybody,” Fisher said Tuesday. “We’re going to do what gives us the best chance to be successful.”
Fisher’s desire to bring in Golson for one year despite having five scholarship quarterbacks could signal two things: The Seminoles’ returning talent on offense is better than what was expected after seeing the offensive line come around, the plethora of receivers and a strong stable of running backs during the spring; and Maguire’s spring game performance (especially the fourth quarter) convinced Fisher he needs a more polished and experienced quarterback to lead that offense.
Golson heading to Tallahassee would make sense on a lot of levels, given the road blocks he is facing trying to transfer to an SEC school and the fact that Florida State doesn’t have a clear cut starter heading into the summer.
Golson would definitely have to hit the ground running once he arrives, but he definitely holds the experience edge over anyone quarterback on the roster at FSU.
