Baton Rouge Police Officer Montrell Jackson tragically lost his life during today’s shooting, and ten days ago he posted some pointed words on Facebook about the struggles of being both a black man and a cop in America.
The words he wrote called for unity as he appeared to be responding to the tragedy in Dallas on July 7th. His message sounded like they came from a man without a country, hated by some because he wore a police uniform, and despised by others even after he took it off.
Despite that difficult position, he still expressed his love for others, his city, and refused to give in to hate. He called for his city to get better and was working towards that when his life was cut short.
This is a terrible tragedy and I hope that his heroic words will help bring some semblance of healing and understanding to those that read it.
