The Jupiter Hammerheads, Single-A affiliates of the Miami Marlins, and the Daytona Tortugas of the Cincinnati Reds organization got into a massive brawl on Wednesday. Brawls between baseball teams is nothing new, but this particular brawl occurred on “Camp Day.” Several hundred local summer camp kids were on hand to watch the game and enjoy a day at the park. They got a little more than baseball on this visit.
According to Andy Slater, multiple coaches were injured in the brawl. In the video you can hear what sounds like cheering from the crowd during the melee. I don’t advocate violence and this scene is definitely not something kids should witness. The violence stems from an argument between a coach and an umpire and then escalates from there.
This is where we are as a society. Disagreements always seem to escalate into violence. I’m not sure what the solution is but there has to be a way for us to disagree with civility. After all, this was only about baseball.
