I had the pleasure of reviewing the all new Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 on the Playstation 4. I must say that I’m not easily impressed when it comes to video games so I was pleasantly surprised. The most noticeable element of PES 2017 is the innovative nature. Player movements and ball movement are so free-flowing and realistic, that you rarely see the same goal simulation twice in sitting. Formations are highly adaptable depending on the player personnel, which makes the game feel more authentic.
The biggest improvement over last season is player artificial intelligence, or AI. Authenticity is further improved by better player reaction and coaching changes, or player substitutions, made throughout the game. For instance, a defensive specialist will be brought in to stop your go-to player causing you to think a little more in terms of strategy and play-calling. The tempo has slowed due to improved defensive play. Defenders are able to read better and play blanket defense, but they are not unbeatable.
Now for the cons; the pesky little licensing issue continues to haunt PES. Popular teams such as Chelsea, Manchester United, and Real Madrid are not in the game. Instead, they appear under aliases. Spain only has Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. However, the game was able to have all the Argentina, Chile, and Brazil teams. Fans of the popular absent teams are able to import the club names and badges; it’s just an extra step or two.
Another drawback of licensing issues is the absence of Copa Libertadores, the UCL, or UEFA Champions League, in South America. This likely will not stop North American soccer fans from purchasing the game but is likely a pretty big blow to South American soccer fans.
I enjoyed the game and while there is room for small improvements, it has a particularly authentic feel to it. Games and player capabilities are more realistic and you have to actually think and strategize with the improved defensive AI.
