Everyone is on edge because of the Trayvon Martin tragedy.
As a black man if you had become comfortable in your surroundings, you aren’t anymore. Police officers are under a spotlight and even if they are doing their job properly they can still be accused of racial profiling.
That is why Torii Hunter regardless of what happened handle this terribly. You can’t be wishy washy with these type of things because if something happened incorrectly he needs to report that, if the police acted correctly he can’t put these type of statements out in a public forum like Twitter.
My alarm went off in my house while I was in it. 20mins later I saw cops checking out the scene. Went outside and they drew there guns on me. They didn’t believe I lived here in Newport coast so they walked me upstairs at gunpoint to get my ID. When I showed him my ID, he said I’m an angel fan hope u guys have a great season. ARE U KIDDING ME!!!!!! Lol
My security system really works twitterland!!!! The police departmen did a great job of protecting my home. Thanks guys!
After his 57,000 followers had a chance to react to the news, Hunter tried to calm some rising emotions:
Hey Twitterland! I’m not upset that the cops did their job today. I’m actually glad they were protecting home. It was my fault that the alarm went off anyways. I just thought it was cool to let u guys know my awkward moment for today. The cops that were here today had there guns drawn but pointed downward in for safety. Those guys handled the situation like trained cops.
Hunter, it turns out, was maybe not in as much danger as he previously led us to believe:
Gunpoint might have been a little extreme. Just guns drawn pointing down.
I spoke to a friend of mine who is in law enforcement and basically what they said is that it isn’t uncommon for criminals to claim they live in the house they have broken into.
Also, because there is no way to know if the person is armed or not it is procedure to draw their weapons but not point unless there is a threat.
So, using that information and thinking about this logically I don’t see anything the police did as incorrect. An alarm went off, they checked out the scene and verified the person saying it was his home was who he said he was.
If Hunter was white would they have done anything differently?
We will never know, but we can’t automatically assume they would. Even with everything going on it is important as a society black, white or Avatar Bosh that we give people the benefit of the doubt unless their actions says otherwise.
