As you know we don’t Mendenhall around these parts, so when Former NBA star Tim Hardaway uttered these words a few years ago unlike most we didn’t go overboard with our reaction.
“You know: I hate gay people. I let it be known,”
Of course I didn’t agree with him and hate is a very strong word to be throwing around. Not my place to tell people how they should feel. You can express how you feel without spewing hate yourself. A lot of people believe it cost Hardaway a lot of opportunities for jobs within the NBA. The lesson to be learned from that is all personal feelings shouldn’t be made public.
In the four years since then Hardaway has had a change of heart and now is embracing the gay community.
“It’s not right to not let the gays and lesbians have equal rights here.”
“If I know El Paso, like they came together when the 1966 team won a championship and Don Haskins started those five guys. I know the city will grow and understand that gays and lesbians need equal rights.”
Hardaway is supporting measures in El Paso to make sure gays have equal rights. Hardaway’s previous hate probably just came from ignorance.
You hate what you don’t understand. It appears since then Hardaway has educated himself and know understands what he said was hurtful to a lot of people.
If he is truly sincere in his 180 degree turn. Good for him.
