Boxing legend and Golden Boy Promotions Founder Oscar De La Hoya will not be attending this weekend’s Floyd Mayweather- Canelo Alvarez fight because he has voluntarily checked himself into a rehab treatment facility. Here is the statement from Oscar:

OSCAR DE LA HOYA STATEMENT

Los Angeles (September 10) – Canelo Alvarez and I have big fights coming up this weekend. His is the ring and mine in treatment.

I will not be at the fight to cheer Canelo to victory since I have voluntarily admitted myself into a treatment facility.

I explained this to Canelo and he understood that my health and longterm recovery from my disease must come first.

Thank you for your understanding. I ask for your support and privacy during this difficult time for me and my family.

Wow. Big news the week of the biggest fight of Canelo’s career.  He underwent treatment at the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, California for his alcoholism back in 2011 and it looks like he is still struggling. Hopefully Oscar gets the help he needs and made the right call checking himself in for his addiction.

  1. nba is fixed says:

At least De La Hoya is smart enough to check himself into a rehab facility instead of getting arrested.
