After the Miami Heat were eliminated from the NBA playoffs the previous week, Pat Riley, the team’s president, held his final press conference on Monday.
Riley told reporters that he anticipates head coach Erik Spolestra “to take a deep dive into the offense and defense” following his team’s elimination from the Eastern Conference as the eighth seed and their five-game first-round series loss to the Boston Celtics. With the Heat already $10 million over the luxury tax threshold, payroll is another major worry.
But when Riley brought up Jimmy Butler’s position on the team both directly and indirectly, the tension in the room increased significantly.
Jimmy Butler gets humbled by Pat Riley
With his comments over the weekend suggesting that the Celtics “would be at home” if Butler was healthy to participate in the game, Butler stirred up controversy.
When questioned about Butler’s comments, Riley lost all tolerance.
“For him to say that, I thought ‘Is that Jimmy trolling or is that Jimmy serious?'” said Riley. “If you’re not on the court playing against Boston or on the court playing against the New York Knicks, you should keep your mouth shut and your criticism of those teams.”

However, Butler‘s remarks might not have been the only reason for such harsh criticism. Riley made reference to the “availability” of Heat players during the press conference. Riley said,
“There are a lot of elements that go into a culture, the erosion of a culture, problems in the NBA that are league-wide when it comes to health and players missing games, when it comes to availability,”
“Here we get eliminated again in the first round. There are things you have to look at,”. “Who moves the needle the most on our team [is] Jimmy. He is an incredible player. What I said about change, is he’s going to have to give some thought for what we really want it to be.”
